The Utilityof 28S rDNA for Barcoding of Freshwater Sponges (Porifera, Spongillida)

چکیده

Sponges (Porifera, Spongillida) make up the bulk of benthic biomass in Lake Baikal and are represented by family Lubomirskiidae, a collection endemic species, several species cosmopolitan Spongillidae. We conducted an analysis D3 domain 28S rDNA 16 freshwater sponge species. Based on molecular data, we were able to identify all collected Spongillidae specimens whose identification was difficult due lack gemmules. Phylogenetic trees have shown that Ephydatia muelleri, Spongilla lacustris, Eunapius fragilis formed monophyletic clades, can be used for their DNA barcoding. For sponges, use this marker is important since gemmule-less Lubomirskiidae are, some cases, indistinguishable from each other morphology. The has been useful species-level sponges within Spongillida.

Porifera: The Sponges

Found at all depths and latitudes, sponges are among the most ubiquitous of marine organisms. With the advent of modern laboratory and field techniques (e.g., electron microscopy, histochemistry, the development of molecular biology and biochemistry, and the use of SCUBA for collection purposes) our knowledge of sponge biology has mushroomed (see reviews by Fell, 1974; Bergquist et al., 1979). ...

Global Diversity of Sponges (Porifera)

With the completion of a single unified classification, the Systema Porifera (SP) and subsequent development of an online species database, the World Porifera Database (WPD), we are now equipped to provide a first comprehensive picture of the global biodiversity of the Porifera. An introductory overview of the four classes of the Porifera is followed by a description of the structure of our mai...

Biodiversity of freshwater sponges (Porifera: Spongillina) from northeast Brazil: new species and notes on systematics.

Systematics and distribution of freshwater sponges is still poorly understood worldwide. This may be due to the scarcity of records, and the limited information about morphological traits used for taxonomy. Brazil has reportedly high species richness in the Neotropical Region; however, this diversity is likely to be significantly underestimated given that there are still many unexplored and poo...

Long-term inheritance of the 28S rDNA-specific retrotransposon R2.

R2 is a non-long-terminal-repeat (LTR) retrotransposon that inserts specifically into 28S rDNA. R2 has been identified in many species of arthropods and three species of chordates. R2 may be even more widely distributed in animals, and its origin may be traceable to early animal evolution. In this study, we identified R2 elements in medaka fish, White Cloud Mountain minnow, Reeves' turtle, hagf...
